Any business owner with a robust online presence that relies on fast-moving traffic and sales understands the importance of a fully-functioning and quick-loading website. There are plenty of web hosting platforms out there, but many are slow, shared, and painful to use. So, we’re going to look at one of the newer kids on the block called Templ and see how they stand up to scrutiny.

Let's dive in!

Who's Templ?

Based in Stockholm, Sweden, Templ is a cloud-hosting platform that’s been around since 2017 when a mix of developers and ecommerce experts founded it. Its website says that Templ was “built as an alternative to slow and insecure low cost shared web hosts, where hundreds of websites are placed on the same server.”

It uses the immense power of Google Cloud to offer web hosting services for WordPress and WooCommerce users. It lists itself on its site as a Google Cloud technology partner. All its experts in its support team are WordPress pros, and the company has made lots of noise since its inception.

Templ’s philosophy is that “only the best is good enough for our customers. That is why we’ve built our web hosting on Google’s insanely fast and ridiculously stable cloud infrastructure.”

So, with a better idea of who Templ is, let's take a look at its: features, prices, support, pros, cons, and what people are saying about it.

Based in Stockholm, Sweden, Templ is a cloud hosting platform that’s been around since 2017 when a mix of developers and ecommerce veterans founded it.

They are utilizing the immense power of Google Cloud to offer hosting services for WordPress and WooCommerce users, and they are also a certified Google Cloud Technology Partner.

Their list of existing clients include many top names in the Swedish ecommerce market, as well as many discerning small businesses.

Templ's Features

The following features come with all Templ's plans:

The dashboard: This is where you manage your site from and can access your website details, manage your email addresses, domain names, backups and more.

SSL: With Templ, every site you set up automatically gets an SSL certificate from LetsEncrypt installed, and they’re also being renewed completely automatically so there’s nothing you need to do when it comes to SSL.

Clients can choose their Google Cloud data center location: Hosting your website closer to where your customers are, increases your website’s speed and its response times by up to 90%. Templ users have the option of doing this with a choice of 20 data centers dotted around the globe.

A free migration service: All new customers are offered a free migration service from any other web hosting provider, as long as it’s a WordPress site. Templ's experts give new customers a temporary domain while they're migrating across. This allows you to double-check that your newly hosted website works precisely as it should before you launch it.

Managed security: Templ manages all the security aspects of hosting your website. This includes regular checks to make sure your website is never down, as well as regular check of your WordPress installation and all its themes and plugins to make sure they don’t have any known vulnerabilities.

Automatic daily backups: You receive daily automatic backups (which are kept for a month). There’s also a 1-click restore function just in case anything goes awry.

Scaling: You can increase your site’s capacity as you grow your business with the click of a button. Downgrading can be done in an instant as well.

There are other hallmarks the Templ website doesn’t sing loudly about. However, they're referred to in a long list of features they offer. This includes a design service (which you have to pay extra for), account sharing with colleagues/partners, and a free speed audit of your website (free upon request).

The remaining features are listed below because they vary depending on your chosen pricing plan and concern RAM, SSD storage, bandwidth, Core, and CPU Core.

How Much Does Templ Cost?

Templ offers a free 10 day trial so that you can try their services absolutely risk free. They also offer 5 different paid plans: Small, Small Plus, Medium, Large and Custom (where you can configure the hardware exactly as you need). You can upgrade or downgrade to any of the packages at any time through the Templ control panel/dashboard. The plans are priced on either a monthly or annual fee basis, with yearly prices coming in cheaper, i.e., if you pay upfront for the full year.

All prices exclude VAT:

  • Small for $29 per month (or $27/mo if you pay annually)
  • Small Plus $54 per month (or $50/mo if you pay annually)
  • Medium for $79 per month (or $73/mo if you pay annually)
  • Large $149 per month (or $136/mo if you pay annually)
  • Custom (costs vary depending on your configuration)

The Small Plan is aimed at new businesses and beginners and gives you:

  • 2 CPU Core (shared, 12.5%)
  • 1GB RAM
  • 10GB SSD Storage
  • 10GB bandwidth
  • Free SSL
  • 1 WordPress install
  • Add-on website (+$10/mo)

The Small Plus Plan is aimed at established websites and gives you:

  • 2 CPU Core (shared, 25%)
  • 2GB RAM
  • 10GB SSD Storage
  • 10GB bandwidth
  • Free SSL
  • 1 WordPress install
  • Add-on website (+$10/mo)

The Medium Plan is aimed at larger and growing businesses and gives you:

  • 2 CPU Core (shared, 50%)
  • 4GB RAM
  • 25GB SSD Storage
  • 25GB bandwidth
  • Free SSL
  • 1 WordPress install
  • Add-on website (+$10/mo)

The Large Plan is aimed at businesses that have large amounts of visitors and users and gives you:

  • 2 CPU Cores (dedicated)
  • 8GB RAM
  • 50GB SSD Storage
  • 100 GB Bandwidth
  • Free SSL
  • 1 WordPress install
  • Add-on website (+$10/mo)

Anyone who needs more than one WordPress install can buy that as an add-on. With any plan, you can buy extra storage at $0.30 per GB per month, and you can add storage without any downtime whatsoever which is really nice.

If you happen to end up using more bandwidth than what’s included, extra bandwidth costs $0.2/GB and Templ also states that they never shut down a site because of overages so that’s not something that you have to worry about.

The Custom Plan: At the time of writing, there were no visible prices on the Templ website for their custom package. The site simply says: “go bananas and build your own custom plan. Contact us for help and pricing.” There are also no details about storage or bandwidth, although we think the custom plan is likely to be aimed at bigger operations and companies managing multiple sites.

Getting Started

Users have to give their website a name, choose the location of the server they want to use (the closer it is to where your customers are, the better). Once that’s done, Templ does all the work in terms of set-up and configuring your personalized Google Cloud server for you.

When your server is set up, your WordPress site is automatically installed, so you don’t have to do a thing. Your website can then be accessed through a temporary domain. It’s temporary because, as we said before, it gives you the chance to run it and make sure everything’s OK before launching. Adding your own domain name is however as easy as 123.

Support

The customer support available seems pretty comprehensive at first glance. There's a blog with useful topics such as How to Use Templ Backups Like a Pro, How to Set Up a WooCommerce Store on Templ, and 7 Reasons Why Cloud Hosting is the Future (and Why You Should Switch Today).

You can also access support via the phone (something many other web hosting companies don’t offer), and there’s a chatbox for live web chat. All their support staff are WordPress and WooCommerce experts. Support is available 24/7.

Also, there's a Knowledge Base where you can type in questions and find articles on a variety of topics. For instance: Account Management, Getting Started, WordPress, How-Tos, Optimisations, and WooCommerce.

What People Say About It

At the time of writing, there wasn’t a lot on the internet in terms of reviews from users. But the few there is are all resoundingly positive, particularly about all the price plans having the same features and Templ’s relationship with Google.

There are a few Facebook reviews, and they, too, are enthusiastic, with reviewers giving five stars. Users like the “unparalleled customer service” and that they even received unasked for support when migrating across to Templ. Another user says that it’s “incredibly easy to set up” and that the interface is straightforward.

We didn’t find any negative reviews at all.

Overall

Templ looks like it offers a great solution to a common problem experienced by many e-commerce operators. No one wants a slow website as customers will simply ‘walk' away to faster sites.

Templ is excellent for anyone who's running their online store using WordPress and WooCommerce. If you want someone else to do all the behind the scenes work, Templ is also ideal because its support team does all your website maintenance and security so that you don’t have to.

Lastly, there are lots to be said for choosing a product that’s allied with Google. There’s little chance of your website crashing, and you’re relying on the same servers used by giants such as Spotify, YouTube and Gmail.
